Having grown up predominantly in Asia and travelled extensively before returning home to Edinburgh, Roslyn Leslie has a fascination with natural light around the world. This includes moonlight as well as sunlight – and how different cultures utilise each for practical and spiritual purposes.
Light, dark and their ability to strongly influence our perception of both space and architecture is of great interest to her. Roslyn is passionate about the possibilities and potential of light for engaging moods with new and existing technologies. She studied lighting design at the Napier University in Edinburgh and graduated in August 2014.

Positive camouflage in pedestrian lighting
Positive Camouflage: Ambient Pedestrian Lighting is about the potential for using less ‘blanket’ lighting solutions at night and instead use light with more natural influence. By researching how people respond to patterned and blanket light scenarios it is possible to get an insight into which is preferred. Then, combined with what we know about pedestrian behaviours with light after dark, why that might be. Is it possible that patterned light could create less light trespass and pollution whilst creating an ambient, safe ‘Positive Camouflage’ environment for pedestrians?
